Mutable quadruplicities: variety and change
You already know that we call Zodiac the great wheel in astrology that houses the 12 signs. But have you ever wondered how it was divided? There is 12 zones of 30 degrees each represented in the wheel. The name of each zone was chosen from an existing constellation: Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, etc. In this article, let’s learn more about it and focus on mutable quadruplicities.
Mutable quadruplicities explained
When we talk about the Zodiac, the first division everyone has in mind is the division by the nature elements: fire, earth, air and water. Those four elements form the triplicities: 4 groups of 3 signs each. But, if we divide the wheel in a different way and making a geometric trace of the zodiacal wheel, we are going to see another arrangement.

From this new division, 3 groups of 4 signs will be seen and we call those astrological quadruplicities (or “qualities”). From this point of view, the signs are divided according to a specific and in common energy, instead of the nature element. And they always follow the same order: cardinal, fixed and mutable quadruplicities.
What we can tell first about mutable quadruplicities is that those signs have a versatile and malleable personality. They love and learn from change. An energy of permanent renewal is born.
Mutable signs: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces
Mutable quadruplicities will always be the last one. And, if you notice, they represent the end of a year season: Gemini (Spring), Virgo (Summer), Sagittarius (Fall) and Pisces (Winter). It is during the time of Virgo when Summer starts to say goodbye. Just as when it is Pisces’ season, the energy of renewal coincides with the end of winter, to start a whole cycle again with spring in Aries (the cardinal sign).
This analogy is important so we can understand that these signs are the transformers. Pisces can be seen as a lazy sign with a lack of attitude do transform something. But they are always absorbing what is outside to change their inner essence. And here we we are discussing these little details in common that connects these 4 signs of different elements.
These four signs are more adaptable and have a emotional energy, focused on movement. Of course they deal with life each on their own way. But usually all of them do not throw themselves into or resist to an obstacle. They prefer to work around. The main word of the mutable quadruplicities is “change”.
Mutable signs: we go with the flow
People born under a mutable sign are flexible and have wisdom within. They keep their mind in the sky, always looking for new ways and ideas. The ability to understand and comprehend what is intrinsic is admirable.
It is not only the Sun that gives someone the qualities of the mutable quadruplicities. That is why it is so important to know how to read our natal chart. When we look into it, we can identify if we have much or little mutable energy. If we are born under a fixed sign, but we have a few other planets positioned in cardinal or mutable signs, our attitude will be more balanced.
Mutable energy is a beautiful energy and represents sensibility. It is from that we learn how to have empathy and a genuine involvement with others. Everybody needs this deeper connection. Where we learn and walk together on our journey. So if you have a good number of mutable signs on your natal chart, you can be happy.
But if somebody has an excess of mutable energy, it will be hard to deal with so much inconstancy. People can easily become indecisive and irresponsible. They may suffer to give a direction to their own life and accomplish things.
They also tend to run away from problems, just ignoring them. Being adaptable to new circumstances is a gift, but if you can not face a problem in a definitive and frontal way, then you end up adding another new problem to your life.
