Visual Interpretation of The Lovers Card
The visual of The Lovers card displays the epitome of duality, protection and conscious balance. It portrays a man and a woman with an angel above them, as though they are being blessed and protected from above.
The sun is shining brightly overhead, which symbolizes a sense of security, warmth, and life. One of them is standing in front of the Tree of Life, while the other one standing in front of the Tree of Knowledge.
One of the trees depicts a snake in an apple tree; this is symbolic of the story of Adam and Eve, where humanity fell when giving in to the temptations of the physical world. The other tree shows 12 flames, which symbolizes the 12 zodiac signs.
The man is looking at the woman, and the woman is looking up to the angel above. This is a metaphor of the path of the trinity: conscious, (man) to subconscious, (woman) to superconscious (angel). It also reflects mind, body, and spirit…along with the many other aspects of the holy trinity and what comes in “threes.”
The image is perfectly symmetrical, and the metaphorical symbolism here is about deciding whether to follow the concerns of man (temptations and physical obligations), or to follow their emotions, heart, and intuition.
Numerology Association of The Lovers Card
The Lovers Card is represented by the Number Six and the Number Six not only possesses the most harmonious and loving energy, but also the most stable energy, of all of the single digit numbers. It emanates compassion, alongside a very grounded physical wisdom while here on Earth.
The Number Six is representative of a feminine energy that balances physical with spirit, and logic with compassion. It is considered “The Nurturer” of the cardinal numbers; it comes complete with maternal instinct, grounded knowledge, and deep spiritual and inner wisdom.
A nurturing mother is able to analyze, get to the heart of a matter, think logically, and also do so with love and kindness. It is an overall domestic vibration – just like those who have a Life Path 6 are meant to be focused on home life, loving partnerships, and children.
The shape of the Number Six displays this same energy, as it looks just like a woman who is expecting a child. It is stable on the bottom, being connected heavily to the Earth. But yet, it also curves upward, keeping a relationship with the higher divinity of spirit.
Zodiac Association of The Lovers Card
The mutable air sign of the zodiac is Gemini. Gemini is ruled by The Lovers Card in the tarot deck (and also ruled by the planet Mercury). Gemini represents the epitome of duality and balance, proving there are always “two sides to every story.”
Represented as the glyph of The Twins, Gemini is characterized by being extremely adaptable and flexible, having two sets of personalities that can relate to anything and everyone. A love of expression of thought and equilibrium are what makes this zodiac sign tick.
Since Mercury, (the planet of communication), is Gemini’s ruling planet, they are quick-witted with a strong sense of logic and analysis. Gemini changes their mind frequently, as they possess strength within both inner and outer analysis. Yet somehow, they charismatically adept at it, convincing others of their changes of heart with agreeable sense standing behind their reasoning.
Gemini is composed of all things regarding exchange and interaction of body, mind and spirit. Their forte, however, is of the lower mind: their ideas and intuitive skills are exceptionally strong here on the physical plane of Planet Earth.
What The Lovers Card Means In a Reading
When we combine everything we have learned about the illustration, Numerology of the Number Six, and its association with the zodiac sign Gemini, it becomes clear what this card means. Sure, The Lovers card does represent the bond between two people: it reflects not only a passionate desire for one another (physical aspect), but also a deeper connection between the two (a true spiritual bond).
Contrary to popular belief, though, this card is not simply about the idea of romantic love in and of itself.
It is also about decision making, commitment, and life choices. It can be about couples…or even business partners, siblings, and friendships. But is also about the choices we make in regard to partnerships of all kinds. Some examples would be the physical versus the spiritual, commitment versus temptation, logic versus emotion, or the self versus humanity.
Getting deeper, it also represents the choices you make in your own belief systems.
Are your values aligned with your life purpose? Are you standing up for what you believe in, or simply taking things at face value in the physical realm?
All of the decisions in your life at the moment are obviously significant when this card appears. You must choose the right path, (using both logic and spirituality), in order to follow the right path. Never take the simple path because it is easiest – unfortunately for us, the most difficult path normally brings the best benefits and growth.
Be honest with yourself and know to follow your intuition as to what the best choice is – it will always be the choice that is both grounded and compassionate.
